"Wisdom of Mind and Body"
THIS
IS NOT A KARATE CLASS
Tai Chi is a Chinese martial arts that is primarily practiced
for its health benefits, including a means for dealing with tension
and stress. Among the martial arts, there are two basic types:
the hard martial arts such as karate and the soft martial arts
such as Tai Chi.
Tai Chi emphasizes complete relaxation and is essentially a form
of meditation, or what has been called "meditation in motion".
Unlike the hard martial arts, Tai Chi is characterized by soft,
slow, flowing movements that emphasize force, rather than brute
strength. Though it is soft, slow, and flowing, the movements
are executed precisely.
The Tai Chi Chaun, also known to western people as Tai Chi, is
an exercise with the movements of one's head, eyes, arms, hands,
body, legs, and feet done in coordination with one's mind and
respiration. People describe Tai Chi practice as "flying
clouds and flowing streams". Phrases like "Exerting
strength like pulling silk threads from a cocoon," and "concentrating
one's spirit inwardly while appearing peaceful outwardly"
are also frequently cited.
